• Alcatraz Island is situated in San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) seaward from San Francisco, California, United States. The little island was created with offices for a beacon, a military fortress, a military jail, and a government jail from 1934 until 1963. Starting in November 1969, the island was involved for over 19 months by a gathering of Native Americans from San Francisco, who were a piece of an influx of Native activism the country over, with open challenges through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz turned out to be a piece of a national entertainment territory and got assignment as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

Today, the island's offices are overseen by the National Park Service as a feature of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; it is available to visits. Guests can achieve the island in somewhat under 15 minutes by ship ride from Pier 33, situated between the San Francisco Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. Hornblower Cruises and Events, working under the name Alcatraz Cruises, is the official ship supplier to and from the island.

Alcatraz Island is home to the surrendered jail, the site of the most established working beacon on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortresses, and characteristic highlights, for example, shake pools and a seabird settlement (generally western gulls, cormorants, and egrets). As per a 1971 narrative on the historical backdrop of Alcatraz, the island estimates 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at most astounding point amid mean tide. The absolute territory of the island is accounted for to be 22 sections of land (8.9 ha).

Tourist spots on the island incorporate the Main Cellhouse, Dining Hall, Lighthouse, the remains of the Warden's House and Social Hall, Parade Grounds, Building 64, Water Tower, New Industries Building, Model Industries Building, and the Recreation Yard.
